Born in 1944. German field biologist with nearly 14 years project experience in tropical countries before starting work for the PESCP, including 1 year (1 mission) in the Seychelles, 7 years (2 missions) in Nigeria, 5 years (2 missions) in Djibouti and 7 months (3 missions) in Ghana.
Fields of interest and professional expertise:
Mammology, ornithology, fishery
Field identification of mammal and bird species in Africa and elsewhere.
Planning and execution of wildlife surveys in tropical countries, assessment
of the status of wildlife populations, and elaboration of conservation
activities taking into account the economic needs of local human communities.
Assessment and sustainable use management of tropical estuarine and
marine fish stock.
Evaluation of ecosystem development in large tropical man-made lakes
emphasizing conservation and sustainable management of fish populations.
Planning, management, logistics and evaluation of projects, and leading
of multicultural teams.
Professional training of junior and senior counterparts including 7
years as senior lecturer in a Nigerian university.
Development and implementation of strategies and actions for the coexistence
of nature and people in tropical countries - conservation biology and biodiversity
in harmony with sustainable development.
Activities in Djibouti:
1991-1996. numerous field expeditions, some new records for occurrence
of bird species, rediscovery of beira antelope, Dorcatragus megalotis,
and verification of the occurrence of maned rat, Lophiomys imhausi.
Oct. 1999 - Feb. 2000: survey on occurrence and status of larger wildlife,
covering the whole area of Djibouti, in cooperation with the IUCN and the
Society for the Conservation of Species and Populations (ZGAP), Germany.
New distributional record of an African civet subspecies, Civettictis
civetta pauli.
Final report: Status Assessment Survey on Wildlife in Djibouti, 2000,
78 pp., with recommendations how to maintain the natural heritage of Djibouti.
